Mexican Independence

Text

Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, opening trade between the new nation and the United States via the Santa Fe Trail. The establishment of the trail accelerated the changes affecting Indigenous nations in the interior of the continent since European contact. Mexican, American, and Indigenous trade along the trail brought horses, steel cookware and weapons, as well as diseases, into Indigenous communities.
