Treaty of Fort Laramie

Text

The 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie was made between the US government and the Cheyenne and Arapaho nations to establish peaceful relations along the Overland Trail in what is today southern Wyoming and northern Colorado. It acknowledged Cheyenne and Arapaho sovereignty along the trail, with the US promising to respect that sovereignty in exchange for safe passage of Americans and allowing the military to maintain forts and roads in Indigenous territory.
