Big Thompson Flood

Text

A flash flood on the Big Thompson River traps motorists in Big Thompson Canyon and claims 144 lives, making it the deadliest flood in Colorado history. In the 1930s, the Colorado Highway Department modified the river’s path to create the highway, inadvertently increasing the power of potential floods.
