Newton has conducted extensive archaeological and historical research into the fur trade, particularly the historic fur trade era of the Western Great Plains, Central and Southern Rocky Mountains. His ongoing research involves analysis of collections from historic trading posts and contemporaneous Native American sites. Newton has published several articles on this topic in peer-reviewed journals and it is the focus of his dissertation.
