Colorado Territory created

Text

The Territory of Colorado was created on February 28, 1861. The territory was formed in response to a massive influx of settlers to the Rocky Mountain region seeking their fortunes during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. The territory was organized by an act of the Thirty-Sixth US Congress and was signed into law by President James Buchanan. The territorial name and territorial seal were chosen in 1861.
